Skylines, Skyscrapers, Europe.

These photographs were gathered while travelling through different European cities, including Milan, Frankfurt, Berlin, Madrid and Paris, as well as several places in Portugal. They are connected by a simple habit: looking upwards and observing the city beyond the usual level of the street.

Seen from below, skyscrapers and tall buildings lose part of their conventional identity. Their façades become vertical planes, edges become diagonals and entire volumes are reduced to silhouettes against the open sky. Glass, concrete and metal respond differently to the weather and light, continuously changing the relationship between architecture and atmosphere.

I was not trying to create a complete record of particular buildings or cities. My attention was drawn instead to alignments, intersections, reflections and contrasts — brief compositions that appear when perspective brings several structures together within the same frame. In these images, the empty space between buildings is often as important as the architecture itself.

Skylines brings together these observations from a journey through Europe: fragments of skyscrapers, urban silhouettes and façades photographed with an instinctive look towards the sky. The series is both an architectural record and a personal visual diary of moving through cities.

Estas fotografias foram reunidas durante viagens por diferentes cidades europeias, entre as quais Milão, Frankfurt, Berlim, Madrid e Paris, bem como por vários lugares em Portugal. Todas partem de um hábito simples: olhar para cima e observar a cidade para além do nível habitual da rua.

Vistos de baixo, os arranha-céus e os edifícios altos perdem parte da sua identidade convencional. As fachadas transformam-se em planos verticais, os limites tornam-se diagonais e os volumes reduzem-se a silhuetas contra o céu. O vidro, o betão e o metal respondem de forma diferente à luz e às condições atmosféricas, alterando continuamente a relação entre arquitetura e ambiente.

Não procurei fazer um levantamento completo de edifícios ou cidades específicas. Interessaram-me sobretudo alinhamentos, interseções, reflexos e contrastes — composições breves que surgem quando a perspetiva reúne várias estruturas no mesmo enquadramento. Nestas imagens, o espaço vazio entre os edifícios torna-se muitas vezes tão importante como a própria arquitetura.

Skylines reúne estas observações de uma viagem pela Europa: fragmentos de arranha-céus, silhuetas urbanas e fachadas fotografadas através de um olhar constante para o céu. A série funciona simultaneamente como registo arquitetónico e diário visual de passagem pelas cidades.
